As I was trying to come up with captions on the pictures for this week's blog, It felt wrong because of all that is going on in our country. I don't want to be insensitive and post all the fun/silly things we are doing and eating while so many people are hurting.
I am often asked what am I eating when I lose weight, what am I teaching the Bear when she thrives at school, what workouts am I doing when I get fit and I blog, blog, blog away and post.
For this week, it's been "how do you talk to the Bear about race?", I am sharing resources for anyone that is worried about the state of our country and is looking for ways to educate themselves, support loved ones or teach their kids about race.
As the parent, I consider myself the model. I can't teach the Bear something if I don't learn for myself so, here are some local organizations I believe in: (I sign up for newsletters, attend events and donate which I've found to be informative and supportive environments)
1) Dialogue on Race Louisiana: https://dialogueonracelouisiana.org/
2) Together Baton Rouge: https://www.togetherbr.org/
3) Power Coalition: http://powercoalition.org/
These issues did not start recently and I don't have the solutions but many other people have been doing research and/or documenting experiences for a long time. I have chosen to hear their words even when it makes me feel uncomfortable. (*I won't be debating anyone back and forth in person or on social media; however, if anyone wants to read and discuss any of these just let me know, that's what I'm here for.)
And finally, for the people that have asked about how to talk to your kids about race. I do not know your kids well enough and everyone has to do what they feel is best for their circumstances, so I offer these with that in mind. I've followed or checked out and found helpful resources within the following:
1) Embrace Race: https://www.embracerace.org/
2) Resource Roundup https://www.prettygooddesign.org/blog/Blog%20Post%20Title%20One-5new4
3) The Conscious Kid: https://www.theconsciouskid.org/about
Just like everything else in life, there are so many more resources out there and very few easy solutions other than putting in the work and I know I have more work to do. I hope everyone is staying safe and well during this difficult time.
with Love
